Raise Hell About Chicago Violence

  • Why is there no national outrage about what is taking place in Chicago? And I am not talking about national dialogue…talk. We retweet the murder numbers for weekends in Chicago like they are scores from the basketball game and then say "Damn, what a shame." When 15 people get killed in a weekend outside of urban communities, the national media swarmed like scavengers around a kill. When it happens in cities like Chicago, Philly, New Orleans, and other urban centers, it is just some "ish" that happens.

A headline in yesterday's Washington Post read:  As Chicago’s homicide rate spikes, mayor and police boss defend their new crime-fighting plan. The article highlighted the debate between current and past policing strategies. Many believe that it is the strategy of the two previous administrations that brought homicide numbers down from the 900-murder-a-year numbers of the 90's to the more recent averages of 450-murders-a-year since 2005. But the article, and much of the media I have seen and read about Chicago violence, always talk about gangs and crime fighting. But this crisis is bigger than gangs and crime fighting.

All of the violence that is taking place in Chicago and other urban cities is not about gangs and crews. It is about the convergence of massive and generational poverty, under-education, addiction, a culture of violence to solve problems, lack of opportunity and unemployment, and oh yeah….lack of hope…on a packed city when it gets hot.

Yes, we have to fight crime and address the issue of drug dealing and turf-fighting gangs. But what about the kids who are not in gangs who are just angry and the others who are just scared who carry weapons because they feel they have to, and use them for the same reason? Crime fighting alone will not change this.

We need more  large and small programs for kids in the city. All research shows more to do, less violence. We need to see churches opening their doors when we can't provide expensive opportunities. We need community members who are not scared to work with former OG's to have conversations with the gangs members and other young people that are wiling to talk. It doesn't mean we stop gang activity. It means we increase communication which helps mend broken communities. When you are willing to talk to me and not at or about me, it changes the environment.

Finally, all of us must get angry and active. How can you be angry about Trayvon and inactive about Chicago? We are hypocrites. Change your avatars to the Chi. Begin to contact organizations and churches like Cease Fire and others doing real work on the ground and start taking bus trips there to volunteer based on what local service leadership and young people say they need. Write and contact your local officials and tell them you care about what is happening in the Chi. Make the world pay attention not to the crime of our children, but the humanity that is so well camouflaged behind their rage, hurt, and fear.

    1. Being from NJ I am familiar with Chicago’s new police commissioner as Corey Booker tried him out in Newark. He put in place certain controversial police programs that were effective for short term peace (bringing down the murder rate in the summer) but ignored the root issues that have historically caused systemic structures that spur this level of violence (Education, jobs, housing, basically all things related to poverty and the hopelessness that many feel in the innercity). Ultimately he was driven out of Newark under political and community pressure. Was he effective overall? No as all he could provide is a bandaid he appears to me to be a city jumper…Chicago needs someone who is local, knowledgeable about the unique culture and workings of the city, the history of gangs there (which is different from the west coast and east coast gang populations) and how their proliferation has affected and limited the community’s growth. Surely there are enough homegrown people across the various disciplines (because its not just law enforcement mass lock up is just a bandaid) in Chicago to tackle this….what is needed is the egos, political grandstanding, and greed (yes someone is profiting off of these deaths) to take a backseat, so that those people who are willing to put in the work (and make no mistake microwave generation it will take a good old fashioned work effort) and realize in this 10 minute attention span society that it will take TIME. So politicians have to be SINCERE and realize that it might not benefit their short term political aspirations but it is the right thing to do if they are serious about eradicating violence in the city. I lived in Chicago briefly 11 years ago on the west side and it was very different from what I was accustomed to here on the east coast….It was easy to support the Travon Martin effort because you could jump on social media and give it 15-20 minutes of your day, you didn’t have to invest much more to feel you have done something (I applaud those who took off work pulled their kids out of school and went down there and marched, protested, etc)…

    2. I still say that just like thinking of most Americans when it comes to problems, African Americans are are trapped in that same mindset of only using band-aids on cancer sores when it comes to the violence, crime and injustice in Black community.

Policing the gang violence and drug dealing is only putting band-aids on the cancer sores of African America. It is no different from sending out people with buckets to dip the water from flooded areas when there is a hole in the dam; until someone admits that there is a hole in the dam in the first place, and actually seals up the hole in the dam, no matter how many people with buckets are dipping the water out of the flooded area, it will continue to remain flooded and all the people’s hard work is a waste.

African America is going to have to demand that the police “PROTECT AND SERVE” and police forces are rid of racist and psychotic police officers, where Black people are concerned, or just stay the hell out of our communities.

The actual source of illegal drugs have to be cut off:

African America is going to have to file a Class-Action Lawsuit against the United States of America, the DEA, and the Justice Department demanding that they change their Drug Policy of waiting until drugs reach the Black community, young Black males, bypassing, skipping totally over every hierarchy of the chain of illegal drug supply, before they actually do anything regarding illegal drug activity.

The actual source of the guns have to be cut off:

African America has to go after the weak gun laws and all the loopholes in them that allow people to legally purchase and flood guns into the Black community without consequence.

      Parents/families:

Those that have children/teenagers in trouble or in the streets engaging in gang and drug activity and that have gun charges, need to be required to take parenting classes or be evaluated to see if they are contributing or aiding and abetting their child’s delinquency.

Unfortunately, some families are going to have to give family members ultimatums for them to chose their illegal/criminal/drug/gang activity or their family.

African America is going have to demand that their county and city officials implement Curfews for anyone under eighteen years of age.

African Americans are going to have to demand that their representatives on the Local, State and Federal level access and educate African America about the numerous government grants that could be used to create after-school, week-end, summer and educational programs for their communities.

African Americans knowledgeable of real estate, banking and finance should be tapped to ensure that as many African Americans as possible are actually owning instead of renting the homes and property(ies) in African America.

African America is going to have to STOP supporting entities like the entertainment industry/record industry, for example, that do nothing but negatively influence young African Americans and brainwash/socially condition them into believing the worst stereotypes of African America, Black people are the ‘norm’.

    3. As long as those in the community accept what’s going on, it will continue. I was there when Darion Albert was killed and the response by Jesse Jackson was appalling. Requesting the help of the National Guard to rid the community of “Terrorists” was as ignorant a move as it was stupid.

The change will come from within. Addressing the economic situation in many of Chicago’s (any other city as well) neighborhoods, and creating a paradigm shift of the “don’t snitch” policy will be good places to start.

When will people realize that this is war and in war the enemy will not knowingly do something to benefit us unless it will greatly benefit them….Critical Race Theory. We must encourage the community to be financially and morally responsible for the community and not dependent on others. This has been and will be the thorn in the side of communal change.

It takes a village to keep the village!

    6. I applaud our energy and tenacity in defending Travon Martin .
I also applaud that our people are starting to take action against a small segment that terrorize the Black community, and cause un measurable devastation , loss of life , and economical devastation to our suffering Black communities . We can’t continue murdering each other at rates higher that our armed forces sustain in Iraq and Afghanistan. We need more community policing, mentorship, our neighborhoods must be stabilized ,before we can expect any investments that create badly needed jobs.

    7. Thank you very much for your comments about Chicago Violence. I am a single woman who try my best to help out, but when you are threaten by a child a person immediately think what the hell! I can only do so much, but when bad behavior and poor upbringing is hopeless. What should people do when they have tried to help the youth?

    8. Folks,If you listen to some of those lyrics backed by those thumping beats of
Today’s music. You should understand why our folks will kill over a chicken wing.
The music says,I don’t like your stupid azz.You worthless piece of crap. You remind me of that n”””””””””””” I blew away the other day.Ha ha ha.Folks no other
Racial group promotes violence against their own like our group…Run and tell that

    9. The real reason there isn’t a national outrage is because the killers are not
White which means the gun control fascist can’t Race Pimp the issue.

    10. it is unbelievable that The mayor of chicAGO JUST GAVE CARD BLANCH TO ILLEGAL ALIENS TO DO AS THEY PLEASE IN THE CITY OF CHICAGO WHILE IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY MURDERS EVERY WEEK IF THESE WERE Anyone other than black ppl killing each other this city no this state would be flaming hot pulling out all the stops THESE ARE a bunch of hypocrites that includes Barack H. 12. The black females have just as much hostility toward each other.
It truly takes a village to raise a child.
You cannot give any kind of input to give a child a positive direction and Love, from so much hateration.
I wish we could change some of our vocabulary and stop saying hating on someone as it normal to talk that a way.
I miss the Elders in the neighborhoods and at the churchs too, you can not buy Wisdom for a heathly life, it’s in the Word.
      Basic principle 101.

    13. It is tragic and a national disgrace to witness so much killing in our cities. We can reduce this but lack the will. All must get involved to stop this starting from the parents, churches, community organizations, and government. We must provide opportunities for our kids so that they can have a positive outlook on life. Other ethnic groups are not haing this much killing and we must reduce our level.
