Morgan Freeman: Obama is ‘Mixed Race,’ Not African American

  • Morgan Freeman, one of President Obama’s strongest supporters, shocked an interviewer this week when he said that America has yet to see its “first black president.”

According to "The Hollywood Reporter", Freeman was trying to make a point that some people oppose Obama because of his race, when in fact, the actor argued, Obama is “mixed race” and not African-American.

“First thing that always pops into my head regarding our president,” he said “is that all of the people who are setting up this [racial] barrier for him … they just conveniently forget that Barack had a mama, and she was white — very white American, Kansas, middle of America. There was no argument about who he is or what he is. America’s first black president hasn’t arisen yet. He’s not America’s first black president, he’s America’s first mixed-race president.”

Freeman went on to criticize the GOP for reflexively and programmatically opposing Obama’s every move. The president, he said, “is being purposely, purposely thwarted by the Republican Party, who started out at the beginning of his tenure by saying, ‘We are going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that he’s only going to serve one term.’

“That means they will not cooperate with him on anything.”

    1. I really like Morgan Freeman, but I don’t know what he was smoking the day he did that interview. Yes, our president is of mixed heritage. However, as Morgan should know, in this courntry (in many cases) the race of the father determines the race of the child. Also, if the child has at least 1/32 African blood in him/her, that child is considered black! Sorry to burst your bubble Morgan, but we do have an African American as President, and he is the first one to do it. If you are looking for someone with “pure” black genes, you’ll never find that person. Be happy he’s there and continue to support him.

    2. If we compare president Obama to the presidents gone before him ,he would look
Like a fly in a bowl of milk.I for one ,am glad I lived long enough to see this take place.Remember folks, just a few years ago,we had an imaginary first black president,(Clinton)and he was a certified white man.We are making progress folks, just keep voting, and help reelect this man with some color in his skin..He’s
Proved he can do the job white folks always said we could never do..Run and tell
      That….

    3. I looked at his comment as a cagey way of trying to take the edge off white people to get them to focus not just on his father’s heritage, but the white side as well. Then perhaps and I doubt it, whites will give our President a break from all the scrutiny he receives daily and get his second term.

    5. as much as i like morgan freeman this is something that he should have kept to himself we all know that he is mixed but so what we might all be mixed with something remember the oldest fossil of man ever found came from africa i am so sick of this race thing we are all a child of GOD if only mankind could just think and say “let us try something new let us put down all wepons wars slavery and money greed and let us love all” can we try that b-4 i leave this earth can we please

    6. @Cool breeze, yes there is in an ideal world “one race – the human race, but that’s not how white privilidged society is organised so while you should be commended for your ultuism, you fail to understand the realities. Morgan Freeman is right, we have yet to see an Afro American in the highest office, someone who can trace their historical roots to slavery and the civil rights movement. But perhaps we should all be wishing for a Native American in the top job if race and racism is to be truly admonished? It is after all, their land.

    7. Black people are not african American they are Americans we never step foot in Africa so how can we be from there they is no such race called black or white there is only one race and that’s the human race .

    8. He has not been able to help black people directly because of the republican majority congress and with his first term as president he can’t help blacks in significant ways because he’s seeking re-election and needs the white votes as well as black votes.Perhaps when and if he is re-elected for a 2nd term he will be able to do more for the black community, but we as black people need to do our part and stop relying on the federal government to help us.And we need to get out to the polls not only during presidential elections but mid term elections and vote in people who will be willing to work with the president , because the republicans won’t do it.

    9. Morgan Freeman has forgotten that there will never be a president who is pure, and straight from Africa. Every “African-American” is mixed with something, due to slavery and contact over time. In society if you have a drop of black blood in you, then you are considered to be African-American.In my eyes President Obama will always be the first African-American president.

    10. While it is true that the President is of mixed race, it is also known that when you are mixed; as long as that mixture includes Black skin ( the President’s father) you are considered Black. He isn’t light enough to pass for white.

    11. is this the same guy who was sleeping around with his “granddaughter”. I wish him and all the millionaire movie stars and acttors would donate a million dollars each to President Oboma’s re-election campaign!! Why wont the actors and rappers form a super pact for the President like the republicans have been doing trying not only to have enought money to elect roomney as president but to win big in the House and Senate races. You guys with the money PLLEASE help President Oboma win and bring in more Democrats to pass his agenda. You know in racist america, one drop of black blood makes you African American, Black, Negro or whatever the politicaly correct term is this month!!

    12. We have a very long way to go. Most of the majority treat the President like he’s an African American. They don’t recognize his mother a Caucasian like the majority from America.

    13. When the editoral cartoons and other images appear of President Obama, they focus on the physical traits he got from his father. The president never hid his bi-racial make-up. That didn’t matter to his detractors. Given the lineage and bloodlines, is it really possible for America to get an entirely black President? The current resident in the White House will suffice. Thank you much.

    14. I agree that Pres. Obama is of mixed-race heritage but is more of an authentic African American than is Supreme Court Justice Clarence (Uncle Tom) Thomas. While Obama has not been able to help blacks in any significant ways, he has not tried to hurt us either as Thomas has. I’d choose Obama any day over Thomas.
