COMMENTARY: Dollar’s Case Remains Murky

  • Since it's Father’s Day weekend, I’d like to give Pastor Creflo Dollar the benefit of the doubt – but my gut says let the police investigation run its course.

Even though the facts in Dollar’s alleged child abuse case are murky, I do know this: there’s a thin line between tough love and domestic violence and the truth between parents and children, in some cases, is somewhere in the middle.

This could be one of those cases.

Dollar, pastor of World Changers Church International, was arrested last week at his suburban Atlanta home, accused of choking his 15-year-old daughter during an argument and charged with simple battery and cruelty to children.

It’s a domestic violence case that has caused widespread consternation among parishioners at Dollar’s church, his supporters, and his critics who refer to the flamboyant minister as “Cash Flow Dollar” because of his extravagant lifestyle.

But now, right or wrong, in addition to the law enforcement investigation, the Georgia State Conference of the NAACP and the Fayette County Branch of the NAACP are conducting a preliminary investigation into Dollar’s June 8 arrest where the girl’s 19-year-old sister told police that Dollar physically assaulted the 15-year-old.

“In order to ensure fairness, the NAACP wants to make sure that first responders to alleged domestic parent/child dispute calls are skillfully trained to clearly distinguish discipline from child abuse,” the NAACP said in a statement.

Fayette County NAACP President John E. Jones implied that Dollar’s daughter may have manufactured the entire story.

“We simply want to make sure that Pastor Dollar is allowed to be a responsible parent and discipline his children,” said Jones.

“Parenting children in this day and time can be very challenging because many children believe that they can call the police at any time to stop any unwanted discipline. Little do they know that this can subject their parent or them to an arrest.”

Clearly, the NAACP makes some valid points, but I suspect many will insist that the civil rights group mind its own business.

Meanwhile, this has become an unsettling case about tough parenting, he-said-she-said drama, and perhaps child abuse. What we know for sure is that Dollar and his daughter argued about a party – a highly-emotional subject for many parents of teenage girls across the country.

And Dollar admitted to spanking his daughter. So when does spanking your daughter turn into child abuse? Should Dollar not have spanked his daughter and given her a stern scolding instead?

What’s troubling to me is that Dollar’s daughter also told police – if true – that Dollar’s abusive behavior toward her “was not the first time it’s happened.”

That’s a serious indictment against Dollar and a disturbing pattern of cruelty if his daughter is being truthful. If Dollar’s daughter is lying, then that’s another problem.

According to police report, the 15-year-old daughter told investigators that she went to the kitchen and began crying after being told she could not attend an upcoming party. Her father entered the room and asked her why she was crying. After she told Dollar that she didn’t want to “talk right now” Dollar charged her, put his hands around her throat, and began to choke her, reports said.

The 15-year-old told deputies her father then “slammed her to the ground and began punching her and took his shoe off and started whooping her with it,” reports said. The deputy in his report said he noticed a scratch on the right side of the girl’s neck close to her throat.

For his part, Dollar said he and his daughter argued about a party she wanted to attend. After the argument, Dollar entered the kitchen and became upset. Dollar told deputies that he entered the kitchen and asked his daughter why she was crying.

Dollar said his daughter became very disrespectful and he approached her and tried to restrain her. Dollar said that while restraining her, she began to hit back and then he wrestled her to the floor. He said he spanked his daughter on her bottom and the back of her legs — but he doesn't believe his actions resulted in child abuse.

He denied the accusations from the pulpit of his mega-church, saying "all is well in the Dollar household" and claimed that he "should have never been arrested," the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

Dollar said the abrasions on his daughter's neck were scrapes from an old case of eczema, adding that the incident was part of the devil's plan to "discredit" his ministry.

"Malicious witnesses testify against me," he said, reading from Psalms 35 in the Old Testament. "They accuse me of crimes I know nothing about … May those who rejoice in my discomfort be humiliated and disgraced."

Preaching from scripture aside, it’s unclear whether Dollar is guilty of physically abusing his daughter, but this much we do know: All is not well inside the sprawling suburban mansion that Dollar calls home.

    1. Mr. Dollar is in the televangelist business of savings soul for a profit.
His Business Model is driven by a huge supply of. Sinners with enough cash to pay for Mr Dollar several luxurious cars. Private jet , $ multi million mansion private chef from france who cooks the very best dishes .
Mr Dollar is smart man who knows well the consequences of child abuse . I stand corrected , but don’t You think this daughter of his is exagerating ?

    2. You make it out as if he’s in the news every week with this same issue. This is the first time something like this has happened to him with all of his 7 children. You sound like an idiot talking about whipping comes from slavery. The Bible say, “Beat your children and it will not kill them!” Not talk to them and put them in time out. How about the scripture that say, “Spare the rod and spoil the child.” Obvious that you didn’ t read the whole book.

    3. you sound foolish. Just another person who is mislead and know nothing of what you are talking about. if you knew the man personally then you wouldn’t have even commented at all. Who can attest to your representation of God? What congregation do you pastor? What world wide ministries do you head and what are their names? You don’t even have the common sense to think that maybe he’s telling the truth or that his daughter was in the wrong? But I guess you are so perfect that you can just come on here and throw rocks. My bad.

    4. ….People…..this SOB….no better than anybody else…….he may think he is……an some of these non-reading Church folks, may think he is…….but he’s not…….he has the same Flaws as the rest of the human race……he’s not perfect….I was told a long time ago…These earthly humans….no matter what kind of robe they are wearing…….Judge Robe..Choir Robe…Preacher Robe…..keep your eyes on them…..somewhere down the road…..you’ll find out who they really are……….and some of these…Pimpin..Cheatin …Stealin…Whore-chasers….Child abuser…..Preachers are the worst…….many of them can talk a good game…..because they are doing some of the very stuff they suppose to be Preaching about………..

    5. THANK YOU THANK YOU! For saying something that actually makes sense. This is coming from a person who is Atheist through and through and don’t give a flying phuck what anyone thinks of it, but when you’re right youre right, and Pooh Bear, you are indeed right on the money. I do not understand how people want to stay locked into child abuse and use the bible to substantiate their ideals. Ummm, what if Creflo beat the shyt outta Taffy? I bet the church would say what Paul said, “Women should keep quiet and that he does not permit a woman to speak in church” lmfao! whaaaaaa, and people follow this. We got a barrier between us on the religion thing PoohBear, but we agree on child abuse. It is dead wrong and for those who think that Creflo will have to answer to god and be judged have their own reasoning, but what if youre wrong? What if he totally gets away with this stuff?

    6. Have you taken the idea that this child stated that SHE DID NOT want to be in the same house as her dad at the time and that she did NOT trust him. She was afraid for her safety? Did you hear that or read that part? That young lady should have been removed from the home immediately and placed with a trusted relative or another arrangement. Imagine her discomfort after reporting her abuser and having to face him again. And where the f*ck was Taffy Dollar? Why didn’t she intervene with this situation? I would have beat the pants off of Creflo if he touched my girl. This girl now has to live with the idea that it’s OK for a man to put his hands on a woman and its NOT OK AT ALL. . No matter father or not, a girl who is fully developed and turning into a woman does not need that in her psyche. And he states that he wrestled her to the ground? wtf!?! Seriously? Where are the decent black men who are appalled at this spectacle? I know most black women are programmed robots who still have brains that date back to 1940, but haven’t black men progressed at all? Come on now. And don’t give me lip, I have read the comments. “Pastor Dollar should spank her behind, and He should give her 2 more whoopins, for calling the cops on him, and all that other bullshyt. I am glad that none of you were around when I was a kid! It took my own courage to escape an abusive family, and ALL my neighbors thought just like yall. Thats messed up.

    7. I am speechless. This is one of the most disgusting things I have ever seen. I feel sorry for this young girl who was abused at the hands of her “father” and I use the term loosely. I am trying to be respectful on this site, but I have a few choice words for that POS. What man hits a girl? I have daughters who have a remarkable dad. He would NEVER EVER EVER EVER lay his hands on his daughters. If they get out of line, I am the MOTHER, and I deal with that. He had no right putting his hands on the rear of a young lady. If he was such a good dad, all corporal punishment should have been taken care of as little children. (Not that I condone it), but you don’t spank teenagers. He should have already trained her and reared her to be a good girl. I cannot stand religion. It overshadows right and wrong and everyone becomes so holy that they dont see child abuse right in their face. And for the black race, wtf!!! I almost wanna say that I am ashamed to be black while reading some of these comments, but nothing could change my love for who I am, but I cannot stand ignorance. No wonder Blacks have no voice in America. Still accepting slavery antics by thinking that beating your children into submission as the white man beat your ancestors is the answer.

    8. I am not a fan of Dr. Dollar, but this is a 15 year old girl in her daddy’s house. He should have had the police follow him home and thrown her out for trespassing

    9. CREFLO SHOULD PROTECT HIS FAMILY FROM THE COURT. Creflo Dollar denies any abuse against his 15 year-old daughter. However, his 19 year-old daughter also backs her younger sister. Yet even if Dollar is right, is protecting his reputation worth putting his children through a court case that would exposed them as liars? If I could, I would advise Dollar not to fight this case and take whatever punishment comes his way. Sometimes, protecting your family is more important, than protecting your reputation.

    10. I, FIND, IT IRONIC, THAT PASTOR DOLLAR, IS PAID, HUNDREDS, OF THOUSANDS, OF DOLLARS, FROM SPEAKING ENGAGEMENTS, FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD, BUT, YET, HE CAN’T, SIT DOWN, AND TALK TO HIS CHILD, WITHOUT GETTING VOILENT. AS, A CHRISTIAN, I, AM TOTALLY, EMBARRASSED, BY THIS SHAMEFUL, BEHAVIOR, FROM THESE, HIGH PROFILE PASTORS. PASTOR DOLLAR, BROUGHT, THIS MESS ON HIMSELF, HE HAD ALREADY TOLD, HIS DAUGHTER, THAT SHE COULDN’T GO, TO THE PARTY, THAT SHE HAVE BEEN, THE END OF THE CONVERSTATION, BUT, THEN, HE FOLLOWERS, HER INTO THE KITCHEN, AND, ASKED HER WHY, WAS SHE CRYING, WHO CARES, IF SHE’S CRYING, SO WHAT? LET HER CRY. I RAISED, TWO DAUGHTERS, BY, MYSELF, THERE, WERE, SOME TRYING TIMES, BUT I SAT DOWN, AND TALKED, TO MY KIDS, BELIEVE, ME IT WORKS, THEY ARE AGES 25, AND 35 YEARS OLD NOW, AND THEY ARE AMAZING, YOUNG WOMEN. PASTOR DOLLARS, DAUGHTER CALLED 911, AND SAID, THAT, HER FATHER, CHOKED, PUNCHED, AND THREW HER, TO THE FLOOR, WHAT WAS THE POLICE, SUPPOSE, TO DO, IGNORE, THIS ABUSE, JUST, BECAUSE, HE’S A PASTOR? WHIPPING, IS SUCH, A BIG PART, OF OUR CULTURE. WHIPPING, IS A LEARNED BEHAVIOR, AND IT STEMS FROM SLAVERY. WHEN THE SLAVES, WOULD TRY TO LEAVE OR STAND UP FOR THEMSELVES, THEIR, OWNERS, WOULD WHIP THEM, TO GET THEM BACK IN LINE, SADLY, THE INHUMANE TREATMENT, HAS BEEN PASSED, DOWN, FOR GENEARATIONS.

    11. It may be appropriate for the NAACP to stay out of this unfortunate family dispute. There are so many other worthy causes the NAACP should get involved in. Especially for those who are less fortunate then Mr. Dollar and who do not have the means to handle their problems. Also, it is shameful and immature of Mr. Dollar to make comments on the pulpit about “part of the devil’s plan to discredit his ministry” in reference to his children. He should be a protector of his children no matter what their dispute is about. Mr. Dollar’s comments should have been, “this is a family matter and we will deal with it in the comforts of our home, etc.” Mr. Dollars is “a man of God.” Where is his reference to God in all of this?

    12. What it sound like is the daughter wanted revenge on her Dad for not giving her permission to attend a party. And teenagers now a days have very smart mouths. She got disrespectful to her Dad and he handled the situation.

    13. This is so sad! Teenagers hold that 911 over parents head when they don’t get their way or are disciplined. When I was raised if parents said no or you got a spanking that was that. We didn’t even think about calling 911. What has happened to this generation?

    14. @Expat…..that s a questionable statement ‘man of God’?…..WHAT God? In this incident and in many others of his actions and or reactions definately show that he is a POOR REPRESENTATIVE OF GOD…why is it when ZOMBIES that follow these so called ‘men of god’ catch them representing themselves they tend to exempt them from accountability or treatment as you and I??….whatever happened in that household should have STAYED in the household so evidently this was not the first altercation in the house but this one just escalated out of control……and I must say as parents you can not wait till their children are looking you eye to eye to decide to then start being a parent and not a ‘friend’……in this case an ATM???
