New Jersey police say a man’s robbery efforts were thwarted after his car ran out of gas.

Authorities in Vineland, New Jersey reported that 32-year-old Steven Mercado entered a local bank on Thursday and demanded money from a teller. He claimed he had a gun in his possession.

Bank authorities called police as he fled with an undisclosed amount of money.

Mercado parked briefly at a nearby a business and tried to drive away, but he ran out of gas.

He called a cab company, but police were able to arrest him before he was able to get far.

Mercado is being held on $40,000 bond. The ‘weapon’ he reported to the bank teller was later found to be a garden hose spray nozzle.
