Walter Mosley is a generous man. Mosley’s latest book “The Gift of Fire/On the Head of A Pin” is actually a two-for-one deal that includes a departure from his usual work.
Instead of his hardboiled detective novels that have thrilled Easy Rawlins, Fearless Jones and Leonid McGill fans, Mosley offers up two novellas that take on a sci-fi mode.
In “Gift of Fire” the Greek god Prometheus was punished for figuring out the powers of the element of fire, and was summarily sentenced to a lifetime chained to a rock where he was slowly devoured. In this retelling of the ancient tale, Prometheus has been set free on the streets of South Central L.A.
In “On the Head of a Pin” two employees, Ana Fried and Joshua Winterland, of Jennings-Tremont Enterprises find out that animatronics has advanced radically so that live-action will be now be indistinguishable from animatronics editing. It opens up a whole new world of filmmaking that can pair stars from the past with stars of the present and future. But there’s a glitch and it’s one that once they find out about it, could change not just the film industry, but the world.
Mosley also announced that he’s started a production company to produce his own books. B.O.B. Filmhouse (Best of Brooklyn Filmhouse) has partnered with Diane Houslin to take a more active role in getting his work to the big and small screen. Although he’s written over 30 books, only one, “Devil in a Blue Dress,” has been made into a feature film. He does have two projects in the works for HBO, though there are no updates yet.
“This is a time of great change in the business – from how we tell stories to where our readers and audiences find them – that I am excited to be a part of the whole process,” Mosley told deadline.com.
