A federal judge on Tuesday set Aug. 14 as the new sentencing date for former Illinois U.S. Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. and his wife, Sandi.
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman postponed today’s original sentencing date and scheduled the new hearing. He noted that the change was not done at the request of the couple’s attorney or prosecutors but rather to “accommodate the court.”
Jackson pleaded guilty this year to the misappropriation of $750,000 in campaign funds. He admitted to spending the money on personal items, including a gold-plated Rolex and mounted elk heads, among other things.
In addition to being ordered to pay back the $750,000, Jackson faces a maximum five-year prison term.
Jackson’s wife, Sandi, is to be sentenced at the same hearing on a related conviction.
Jackson could potentially lose one or both of his homes from a forfeiture motion filed last week by the prosecutors of the case.
The judge has to decide whether to stagger the couples sentences so that they don’t have to be in prison and away from their two children at the same time.
