Dear Tom,
My sister Kim is a single mom who should be the poster mom for single moms. She is a full-time employee with the federal government – which is her first and only “real” job after completing her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Bowie State University.
After a full day at work and a 90-minute commute each way, this dedicated mother comes straight home to her 13-year-old son, Dorien. She makes his dinner and makes sure that he is ready for the next day.
Homework is a priority and she works side by side with him each and every night and it has paid off because he has been a straight “A” student since the first grade! He takes honors classes, is astute in black history, and he admires Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so much so that he has memorized the “I Have A Dream” speech.
Her son has received so many leadership and academic awards that the teachers at his school wish they could clone him – but it all boils down to the love and dedication of his mom.
Her son is her life and being a single mom hasn’t been easy. I would love to see her go on a weekend away to just enjoy herself. And while she is gone, I will take care of this fine young man that she has molded to be respectful, young gentleman.
