“By doing this we made the ancestors happy. If we hadn’t done what my son had asked then something bad would have happened in the family,” Patience said, noting that the ceremony was not legally binding. “I didn’t have a problem with it because I know it’s what the ancestors wanted and it would make them happy.”
Sanele said when he is older, he plans to marry a woman his own age.
Meanwhile, we have lots and lots of questions about this, but why won’t bother ask.

this is crazy…..
Just when you thought you’ve heard it all somthing tops it. WTH is this even legal and where is social services when you need them most? Somebody needs to be in jail!
WHT?! – It this 8 year old was a girl marrying a 65 year old man – we all would be up in arms about child abuse. Why are we not up in arms about this one. His grandfather said he should get married – maybe someone in the village is under age 15 that he could have married. Did he marry his grandfathers girlfriend or wife? It is hard to discern the details because the story is not well written. I do understand about the belief that the dying wishes of an elder should be adhered to but – 65 years old- REALLY?! I know there is someone younger for him to marry on paper (NO CONSUMMATION) . But I am still perplexed that this is ok but an 8 year old girl would be a different story – 8 years old is a baby no matter what gender and should be protected.
